#GetKind with Random Acts

August 14, 2015 By lisa

Random Acts, founded by actor Misha Collins of Supernatural, is a global nonprofit organization which encourages everyone, everywhere, to do random acts of kindness. They have raised enough money to support the construction of orphanages in Haiti, and are currently working on building a school in Nicaragua. Meanwhile, supporters all over the world donate their time, creative talent, and money to local organizations and individuals right in their own backyards. I want to tell you about this … [Read more...] about #GetKind with Random Acts

The Intersection of Horror and…Children’s Books?

July 29, 2015 By lisa

If you've ever been around kids for an extended period of time, you've probably read them a story or two. Some are completely benign--almost saccharin-sweet--while others are...less so. But only in the realm of children's books can kids (and perhaps their loving adults) face off against the big bad monsters and come out on top. Sometimes the monsters end up befriending the kids, or sometimes they end up magically becoming less-than-troublesome, and spend the rest of their days acting a bit like … [Read more...] about The Intersection of Horror and…Children’s Books?

Just A Peek, For Fun!

November 5, 2014 By lisa

I have kind of a love/hate relationship with movie musicals. Generally, I LOVE them. But if they're done poorly, it's utterly painful to sit through. (Just as an example, you can go back and check out my review of Les Misérables, which I thought was amazing--with one exception.) Next month comes Hollywood's latest offering, Sondheim's Into the Woods. It boasts a HUGE cast of big names, and hopefully all of them will do their roles well. I do tend to judge actors' singing, although they get big … [Read more...] about Just A Peek, For Fun!

What is Privilege?

October 22, 2014 By lisa

I have been asking myself for a while now what it is about the term "white privilege" that causes such a visceral, negative reaction in me. This term—and others that are similar—get thrown at people like a slap in the face, in the hopes of getting them to wake up and shake themselves out of their own perspective, for the betterment of the common good. But that's not the effect it has on me. I hear "white privilege" and something in me just shuts down, pushing me out of the conversation entirely. … [Read more...] about What is Privilege?

RIP Robin Williams

August 26, 2014 By lisa

Well, I finally did it. I watched one of the inevitable montages that followed in the wake of the untimely death of Robin Williams.I probably could have chosen a better one. But it was kind of accidental. I was watching a video of Billy Crystal's tribute to the man at last night's Emmy Awards. I didn't know it was coming, although I really should have guessed.I probably could have chosen a better day. As most people know, women tend to have particular stretches of time where they are more … [Read more...] about RIP Robin Williams
