Who Am I?

I have loved movies for my entire life. I love all kinds of movies: action/adventure, romantic comedy, horror/scary, dramas of all kinds – they’re my escape from the ruts in which we can so easily find ourselves. I used to want to be a movie star when I was a kid (okay, who am I kidding? I still do), and I’m probably the only person I know who doesn’t mind going to the movies alone. Sure, it’s a little awkward buying that “ticket for one” but once I’m there, nothing else matters. I love getting swept away by a good story, and I hate stories that are so transparent that I can see how it will end five minutes after it’s begun. I sometimes like to imagine I’m a producer screening my latest project before it’s released to the teeming masses. And sometimes I just like to disappear into the darkness and be somewhere else for a couple of hours.

I’ve tried to find a good place to share my thoughts on movies, which usually just meant throwing in a random opinion/review amid the other stream of consciousness that comes out of my brain on a daily basis. But I have finally decided that the time has come to give a separate voice to my love of movies. I wouldn’t necessarily call this a “critique” site, although some of my thoughts on various films are less than favorable. They’re just my thoughts about some of the many movies I’ve seen; some are recent, some will be reposts from other blogs I’ve had. And I watch movies in a terribly random fashion. You may read something about a movie that came out fifteen years ago, and yes, I’ve only just gotten around to watching it. That’s what happens when you have a movie queue a mile long.

Some of my favorite movies include: psychological thrillers like The Game, and mindbenders like Christopher Nolan’s Memento and The Prestige; the Lord of the Rings trilogy; movie adaptations of musicals like Chicago and Phantom of the Opera; the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Secret Window, Finding Neverland, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, or anything else Johnny Depp has starred in; Disney’s Fantasia and Fantasia 2000; probably every Tom Hanks movie ever made; the Indiana Jones movies; the X-Files movies; period flicks like Amadeus and First Knight; movies with interesting plots like The Truman Show and Pleasantville; movies about musicians, like The Commitments and That Thing You Do. Scary movies, but no gore fests. And then there’s The Princess Bride….
