It’s About Time

September 17, 2017 By lisa

It's almost embarrassing how long it's been since I've posted on this blog. It's not that I haven't watched many movies, although I've seen fewer than I'd like. Mostly, I've simply found that I didn't have much to say about the movies I have watched--nothing beyond a simple tweet or two. That changed recently, starting this past Mother's Day when my oldest son gave me a copy of Stephen King's 11/22/63. He'd kept the receipt because he knew that it was likely that this book was already a part of … [Read more...] about It’s About Time

Is It Time to Ask for More from Animation?

January 19, 2014 By lisa

This afternoon I finally bit the bullet and went out to the theater to see Disney's latest animated film, Frozen. I knew a lot of my friends (many of whom do not have children, it should be pointed out) really loved this movie, and at the time of this writing it has just received a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. Rumors are swirling that it will be headed to Broadway soon, although that isn't so much a benchmark of a quality film as it is a somewhat expected pattern from Disney. I had seen … [Read more...] about Is It Time to Ask for More from Animation?

What’s “Great” About Gatsby?

May 29, 2013 By lisa

I came to the blog today hoping to sketch out a bit of musing about an interesting Romanian film I saw last night at the Art, but on my morning meanderings I stumbled onto a friend's blog and read an absolutely fantastic review of Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Now I'll admit, I haven't seen this yet, mostly because with the last couple of Luhrmann films I saw, I had to take a couple of runs at them before I could actually sit through and enjoy them. Okay, okay, I didn't ever … [Read more...] about What’s “Great” About Gatsby?

Rise of the Intelligent Movies

December 5, 2012 By lisa

Okay, it's been a few months since I last stopped by here to write. Anybody who follows me even a little bit knows that this is standard procedure. It's not that I haven't seen more movies worth writing about--far from it. Life just seems to have its own way of taking over your time. Kids go back to school, work picks up, I do stupid things like start writing a novel (well, okay, more like a novella, but whatever), and on and on. This morning during my usual social media rounds I read two … [Read more...] about Rise of the Intelligent Movies

FilmAnnex: Not Your Ordinary Mermaid

March 5, 2012 By lisa

I've recently signed on as a blogger/editor at www.FilmAnnex.com, where periodically I'll be writing about interesting items I find over there. My first post is about a real gem of a teaser from the Vancouver Film School, re-imagining The Little Mermaid. Check it out! http://www.filmannex.com/posts/blog_show_post/not-your-ordinary-mermaid/46854 … [Read more...] about FilmAnnex: Not Your Ordinary Mermaid

Hearts in Atlantis

March 25, 2010 By lisa

Repost of a rather brief review of a movie I've wanted/not wanted to watch for some time. This was originally posted on my Flixster account, which I suppose could partially account for its brevity. Also, I find if I'm not interested in a movie too much, I'm apparently not interested in discussing it much! ==================================================== It really pains me to give a low rating to a film starring Anthony Hopkins, but with Hearts in Atlantis, I'm afraid I must. As a constant … [Read more...] about Hearts in Atlantis
