There's nobody who embodies the magic of movies better than Georges Méliès. I just got around to watching HUGO, and I'm so very glad I did. Looking for some visual inspiration (it's perfect for steampunk fans like me, after all!), I stumbled onto this post from the B+ Movie Blog. The pictures alone are beautiful enough that I wanted to share it with you. If you haven't yet taken the time to see this movie, please do yourself a favor and see it. … [Read more...] about Hugo: Truly A Love Letter to Cinema

Happy Birthday, Johnny Depp!
Well, I couldn't let the day go by without taking a minute to wish a Happy Birthday to my favorite actor, Johnny Depp! After a long day, I'm about ready to settle in (finally!) and watch something of his, though I'm not sure quite what. Netflix recently began offering The Rum Diary on streaming, which is cool. I'm just not sure if I'm in the mood for that particular film. I could always peruse the DVDs I own... - Edward Scissorhands - Ed Wood - Ninth Gate - Sleepy Hollow - Chocolat … [Read more...] about Happy Birthday, Johnny Depp!
Men In Black III
I figured since I had mentioned in my previous post that I was heading out to see Men In Black III soon, I might as well indulge you all with a quick follow-up. As was the case with most of my friends, I had no recollection of seeing Men In Black II. It took reading a plot synopsis online to jog my memory enough to recall that since I knew what happened during that movie, I obviously DID see it. Sadly, that's all I remember about it. Therefore, I went into MIB III with the expectation that … [Read more...] about Men In Black III
Memorial Day Weekend Almost-Double-Feature: Avenging Dark Shadows
This weekend I had the rare treat of heading to the theaters not once, but twice: first was a date night to see The Avengers, then a small group outing to see Dark Shadows a couple of days later. Not quite a true double-feature, but for the purposes of semi-brevity here on the blog, the term will have to do. I got settled in at The Avengers ready for your typical summer-blockbuster-action-adventure-popcorn-flick. I really wasn't expecting a lot of depth of character or even a terribly … [Read more...] about Memorial Day Weekend Almost-Double-Feature: Avenging Dark Shadows
Film Annex: Mark Ruffalo Weighs In On What Makes A Family
Earlier today I was reading about North Carolina, the latest state to vote on a constitutional amendment concerning the definition of marriage. Some people regard the issue of marriage equality as a complex one, while others see it in a more simplistic way. And neither approach guarantees a positive response. These are the thoughts that were going through my mind today during my visit to Film Annex, so I thought I'd look at some films about marriage. Instead, I found this interview with Manny … [Read more...] about Film Annex: Mark Ruffalo Weighs In On What Makes A Family
A Pre-review of The Raven
I'm anxious to see John Cusack star as Edgar Allan Poe in The Raven. It opened this weekend, to a slew of absolutely awful reviews. This has not deterred me in the least, but it has made me think a bit more than usual about perception in filmgoing, and about the role and purpose of a film critic. First, in the spirit of full disclosure, I feel I should let you know that I am a huge fan of both Edgar Allan Poe and John Cusack. Poe's stories are very intriguing to me, drawing me in as few authors … [Read more...] about A Pre-review of The Raven
