Crashed Into Something Good

April 26, 2022 By lisa

If you know me, you know that I'm a wee bit obsessed with visual media -- film and television in particular. Maybe it's because I struggle with visualizing in my mind. I can do it, like when I'm reading a book. But I find myself immensely relieved when I can enjoy a movie based on that book, because I am shown far more than I ever "saw" before. Also, I just love how all of the pieces come together. The words of the story combine with just the right view from the camera plus music and motion, and … [Read more...] about Crashed Into Something Good

On Fame, Loss, and Digital Media

January 2, 2017 By lisa

I was moved to return to this blog after an excruciatingly-long absence after reading a very thought-provoking article over at ScreenRant about the latest Star Wars movie, Rogue One. SPOILERS IN BOTH THE SCREENRANT ARTICLE AND IN THE POST BELOW. In Rogue One, which ends barely minutes before the events of A New Hope, we saw a couple of familiar characters, who were absolutely necessary in order to fully tell this part of the story. One was Darth Vader, still ably voiced by the one and only … [Read more...] about On Fame, Loss, and Digital Media

A Tiny Little (Spoiler-Free!) PSA Regarding A Certain Movie Coming Soon

December 15, 2015 By lisa

Yesterday was the big Hollywood premiere of a little movie called Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Tomorrow night, my family and I will be partaking of the Big Deal at its first local showing, in IMAX 3D. My husband, fanboy that he is, bought our family tickets approximately five minutes after they were available for purchase. Occasionally, friends and family members tell me that they have made choices about whether or not to see a particular movie based on a review I've written. A surprisingly … [Read more...] about A Tiny Little (Spoiler-Free!) PSA Regarding A Certain Movie Coming Soon

RIP Robin Williams

August 26, 2014 By lisa

Well, I finally did it. I watched one of the inevitable montages that followed in the wake of the untimely death of Robin Williams.I probably could have chosen a better one. But it was kind of accidental. I was watching a video of Billy Crystal's tribute to the man at last night's Emmy Awards. I didn't know it was coming, although I really should have guessed.I probably could have chosen a better day. As most people know, women tend to have particular stretches of time where they are more … [Read more...] about RIP Robin Williams

Say Anything

December 5, 2012 By lisa

I was revisiting an old blog today when I found a post from a few years back about John Cusack, and I thought I would repost. Enjoy! I was actually on Black20.com defending Cusack against some folks who had the audacity to suggest that Bill Murray--of all people--was the best actor of our time.  Sheesh!  Just remember Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity, and Being John Malkovich, and you'll understand why I love John Cusack so much.  He was even in Stand … [Read more...] about Say Anything
