I have been asking myself for a while now what it is about the term "white privilege" that causes such a visceral, negative reaction in me. This term—and others that are similar—get thrown at people like a slap in the face, in the hopes of getting them to wake up and shake themselves out of their own perspective, for the betterment of the common good. But that's not the effect it has on me. I hear "white privilege" and something in me just shuts down, pushing me out of the conversation entirely. … [Read more...] about What is Privilege?

Letter and Spirit
I don't like to admit it, but I am not a fan of the temporary rector at my church. As such, I have been avoiding going to Mass for a number of months, knowing that I can always come back once he is permanently replaced. Is It A Movie, or Is It A Message? Or Is It Both?
It's official. I have given up. I'm over politics and politicians. I'm over Fox News. Just a Little Holiday Something
Perfected Sugar-Free Peppermint Mocha Taking a break from big, heavy topics to bring you a little cup of sugar-free heaven. I'm addicted to Starbucks' peppermint mocha, and I've tried off and on for quite a while to make a suitable sugar-free substitute at home. I'm convinced the last piece of the puzzle was creating a lovely peppermint syrup made with Stevia in the Raw -- I got off Splenda a few months ago, when I started to notice that foods sweetened with actual sugar had started tasting … [Read more...] about Just a Little Holiday Something
About the Utterly Unknown
Many thanks to my friend Zack, who shared this wonderful quote on his Facebook page today. It's a perfect concept to remember on the days when my brain gets too caught up in the mundane. "The dark dangerous forest is still there, my friends. Beyond the space of the astronauts and the astronomers, beyond the dark, tangled regions of Freudian and Jungian psychiatry, beyond the dubious psi-realms of Dr. Rhine, beyond the areas policed by the commissars and priests and motivations-research men, … [Read more...] about About the Utterly Unknown
